Das Portal wurde durch das koreanische Unternehmen SK Communications, einem Tochterunternehmen der SK Group, lanciert. Neben Nate betreibt das Unternehmen auch das Netzwerk Cyworld, das 2003 von SK Communications aufgekauft wurde.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Unternehmen One Store (Tochterunternehmen von SK Communications) betreibt das Portal die Webtoon-Seite Toon & Book, die im April 2021 an den Start ging.
